近年のやきものの隆盛はめざましく、萩焼もまた茶陶として高く評価され、広く愛好さ れてまいりました。
こうした隆盛の陰にはもちろん多くの先人の努力があったわけですが、なかでも三輪休 和はその直接の原動力となった重要な一人といえます。
三輪休和は由緒あるの窯元に生まれ、四〇〇年になんなんとする伝統技法を習得し、 その源流ともいえる高麗茶碗の研究をかさね、氏独自の作域を調和させて温雅な趣に富ん だ作風を作りあげました。とくにあたたか味のある藁白釉の独特の釉調は、世に休雪白と いって親しまれ、昭和四五年には重要無形文化財萩焼の技術保持者として認定されました。 しかし工芸の本来的な姿がそうであるように、三輪休和はかならずしも芸術作品を意識 して作陶したわけではなかったと思われます。
その仕事の真価は、陶工としての技に対するきびしさにあるといえましょう。もし私た ちがそこに芸術性を見るとするなら、それは萩焼の技法一筋にかけたきびしさの結晶によ るものにほかなりません。
このたびの企画では、昨年の秋八六歳でその生涯を終えた三輪休和の、初期から晩年に 至る作品約一〇〇点によって、近代萩焼から現代萩焼への展開を主導した作家の全体像を 描き出し、同時に現代の萩焼そのものを見なおす手がかりを得られればと考えています。 開催にあたり、本展実現のためにお力添えをいただきました関係各位のみなさまに厚く 御礼を申しあげます。

ごあいさつ
日本のやきものを代表するひとつで、茶陶の名門でもある萩焼。その頂点に位置した人 間国宝・三輪休和氏が八十六年の生涯を閉じたのは昭和五十六年の十月二十四日でした。今 回の「人間国宝・三輪休和遺作展?萩焼におけるその位置―」は、没後二年に当たり故人の 人と業績を回顧し追悼するものです。
萩焼は、十七世紀初頭に、山口県の萩に入府した毛利輝元が朝鮮人陶工に城下で開業させた御用窯です。李朝朝鮮の製陶技術と作調を日本の風土に移植したものとして茶人の間で賞美され、「一楽、二萩、三唐津」と茶陶のベスト3にも数えられています。三輪家は十七世紀後半に御用窯に加えられ、以後今日まで茶陶・萩の歴史に中核的役割を果してきました。
休和氏(本名・邦広)は昭和二年、三十二歳で三輪家十代を継承して休雪と号し、初代以来、三輪窯が目指した「高麗茶碗の和風化」をライフワークとして追求しました。用」を第
一義とした茶陶づくりに徹しながらも「休雪白」に代表される独特の休和様式を完成、工芸作家(日本工芸会正会員)として現代の萩焼を創造しました。昭和四十五年、重要無形文化
財技術保持者(人間国宝)に。近代になって低迷、沈滞していた萩焼を今日の空前の繁栄に 導いた功労者でもあります。
この遺作展では、初期から晩年に至る代表作のほか、萩焼の源流である高麗茶碗や古萩、 江戸期の三輪窯の作品、そして関連資料など計二百二十余点を集め、休和陶業の特質と、萩 焼の流れの中でその位置をさぐります。
遺作展と、この図録の企画、構成、製作にあたって並々ならぬ御支援と御協力をいただい た御遺族、研究家、施設、機関、愛蔵家の皆様に心から御礼申し上げます。
