The completion of the Japanese sword is believed to date from the latter half of the Heian period to the early Kamakura period. This exhibition focuses primarily on the works of master craftsmen who flourished during this formative era of the Japanese sword?such as Yasutsuna of Hoki, Yukihira of Bungo, and Kanehira of Bizen?while also providing an overview of what swords forged in Japan were like prior to this period. In addition, to coincide with the exhibition, we are specially displaying a selection of swords from our museum's collection and deposits, including the naginata by Nagamitsu (National Treasure), the renowned Meibutsu "Matsui Go" (Important Cultural Property), and "Tonbogiri" (The Dragonfly Cutter), one of the Three Great Spears of Japan.
