■ English Description

HERMS Paris Vintage Porcelain Ashtray / Vide-Poche
Stylized Fish Motif Cobalt Blue & Gold

A striking vintage porcelain ashtray by HERMS Paris, featuring a large stylized white fish set against a deep cobalt-blue ground and surrounded by extensive gilt decoration.

An identical design has been documented by an international vintage specialist as a “Herms porcelain ashtray, 1970s-1980s.” The bold graphic composition, generous proportions and extensive gold detailing are characteristic of Herms decorative porcelain from the late 20th century.

The piece is estimated to date from the 1970s1980s.

Its most distinctive feature is the single large fish at the center. Rather than being rendered realistically, the fish is highly stylized and almost geometric in appearance, using white and blue to create a strong modernist composition. The surrounding gilt decoration creates a dramatic contrast with the deep cobalt-blue background.

The restricted palette of cobalt blue, white and gold gives the piece a particularly sophisticated and graphic appearance, quite different from the more colorful animal and fish designs also produced by Herms during this period.

Sculpted cigarette/cigar rests are incorporated into both sides of the tray. Originally designed as an ashtray, the piece can also be used today as a vide-poche, jewelry tray, desk accessory or decorative object.

The underside is finished with genuine leather, helping to protect furniture from direct contact with the porcelain. Before listing, the leather underside was lightly treated with a small amount of leather conditioning cream as basic maintenance.

Although Herms produced a variety of animal and fish-themed porcelain ashtrays during the late 20th century, this particular cobalt-blue and white single-fish design appears relatively infrequently on the international vintage market.

The deep cobalt-blue ground, white fish motif and extensive gilt decoration remain visually striking and give the piece a strong decorative presence.

The estimated production period is based on documented comparable examples, design and construction, and should not be regarded as a factory-confirmed manufacturing date.
